What is Project Management?

Some organizations and individuals think that Project Management is the use of tools such as Microsoft Project to plan a series of tasks in order to produce something in a given amount of time. Wrong.

Others think that Project Management is all about holding meetings to discuss why ‘someone’ isn’t producing the goods and then to schedule another meeting to decide what to do. Wrong.

A few think that Project Management is about producing a series of documents and control forms, predicting risk, calculating cost & value and then monitoring results. Close but still wrong.

In fact Project Management is about all of the above. If you don’t do them all your project will, at best, end up late and over budget. And furthermore you will be doomed to repeat this over and over again.

Project Management has to be carried out using a blend of activities and skills. It needs to be a whole organization event. And yes, there will be meetings, some of which may have to deal with delays and overruns. But if the project has been managed effectively from the beginning then these delays, or rather the causes for the delays, will have been predicted as potential risks and contingencies will have been put in place to handle them. What is more you will learn from them.

Or more to the point, what it isn’t.

...together we succeed
